Lately my elderly dog Edgar has been waking me during that time in the morning when I get my best sleep, that is to say, an hour before I really want to get out of bed. Wiping muck from my eyes, I wobble my way to the door outside. I can hardly resent the old shit as he wags his whole body in thanks when I hook his leash. It doesn’t take him long to find the right spot to pee and he wants to go right back inside and so do I but I am beginning to appreciate these quick outings. They all have something of the numinous about them. This morning, vermilion ash leaves were whirling, whirling, whirling like they might never come down.
